CANDIDATE

CANDIDATEn. One who by the advice of his friends reluctantly consents to sacrifice his private interests to the public good. This word comes from the same root as “candid” and “candy,” originally signifying white. It was formerly supposed to be an allusion to the Athenian method of selecting a nominee by a white ballot, but later researches of that eminent philologist, Professor Ned Townsend, show that it marks the survival of the political aspirant’s custom of giving taffy.
